Why a Canadian should care who signed the licence
Gambling law in Canada starts in the Criminal Code, and the Code hands gaming to the provinces. That is why your first slot machine probably belonged to a provincial corporation, and why Ontario could build its own licensed online market in 2022 while the other provinces did not.
Browse outside Ontario's regulated list and you will see other names in the footers: a commission on a Mohawk territory near Montreal, an island in the Caribbean, an EU member state in the Mediterranean, an island off the coast of Africa. Each one promises something different. Some run a real complaints desk. Some publish a searchable register. One or two leave you with little more than a certificate.
The licence will not make a slot pay more, and it will not make a bonus fairer. What it changes is the question you get to ask when a withdrawal stalls: who, besides the casino, has to listen?

Reading a footer badge without being fooled
A footer badge is an image. Anyone can paste an image. Before you trust it, do three things.
- Click it. A real seal opens a page on the regulator's domain, not on the casino's.
- Match the website address shown on that page with the one in your browser bar, letter for letter.
- Note the company name and licence number, then search them on the regulator's site yourself, typing the address by hand.
If step one opens nothing, or opens a PDF hosted by the casino, treat the badge as decoration until you have checked it by hand. It takes less time than a coffee run.

Is a casino licence the same thing as legal permission to serve Canadians?
Not quite. Gaming falls to the provinces in Canada. Only Ontario runs a private licensing system for online casinos; elsewhere the licence tells you who supervises the operator, not what your province allows.
