What BetMGM is, and who is behind it
BetMGM is a joint venture owned half by MGM Resorts International, the Las Vegas resort company, and half by Entain, the international betting group that also owns Sports Interaction. It grew up in the United States, state by state, and on 4 April 2022 announced its launch in Ontario on the first day of the province's open market. Ontario was its first market outside the US and, by its own count, the twenty-third overall.
Four years later Canada has a second open market. Alberta launched its regulated online gambling on 13 July 2026, with a provincial regulator and a Crown corporation managing operator agreements, and BetMGM was reported by the trade press among the brands live on day one.
Who BetMGM suits
It suits a player who likes the resort connection and a polished, US-style product: a large sportsbook, a casino with many slots, and the feeling of a brand that exists in the physical world. If you have stayed at an MGM property and enjoy the link, that is a reason no alternative can reproduce.
It suits less well the player who never gives the logo a second thought. For someone who opens a casino to play blackjack after dinner, the resort in Nevada adds nothing to the table in front of them. What counts is the number of seats open at the stakes they like, how the cashier treats their card, and whether the welcome offer is one they would actually use. Why people search for an alternative
A big brand name is not the same thing as a better fit. The searches we see around BetMGM tend to come from three kinds of player. Some live outside Ontario and Alberta, where the provincially regulated BetMGM sites do not serve them. Some want a larger live dealer floor than a slot-heavy US design provides. Dollars in, euros on the balance
One difference deserves more than a table row. BetMGM's Canadian sites run in Canadian dollars. The five alternatives above keep your balance in euros, which means that a deposit from a Canadian card is converted by your card issuer at its own rate, and a withdrawal is converted back on the way out. Many cards also add a foreign transaction fee.
That is not hidden and it is not a reason to rule the five out, but it should be part of the decision. Look at your card agreement for the fee before your first deposit, or use crypto, which the five also accept, if you already hold it. For a player who deposits rarely, the cost is small; for someone who moves money every week, it adds up and is worth knowing in advance.
