Four things sold under one word

A no deposit bonus, priced

Say a site gives $10 for signing up, with a playthrough of 40 times and a cash-out limit of $100. To release it you stake $400 on slots. At a typical slot return of about 96%, $400 of play costs around $16 on average, which is more than the $10 you started with. So the usual outcome is zero, and the lucky outcome is capped at $100. That does not make the offer a scam. It makes it a free trial, and that is the right way to think about it.

Operators also use no deposit offers to get you through identity checks, and a few attach them to a phone number or a first login in the app. Expect to be asked for something.

Free spins, priced

Twenty spins at 20 cents is $4 of stake. On a 96% slot the expected return is about $3.84, before any terms. If winnings from the spins arrive as bonus money with their own playthrough, knock off a good part of that. Free spins are fun, and they are a good way to try a slot you would not have paid to play, but they are worth a few dollars, not the headline number.

A deposit match, priced

This is the offer most Canadian players actually take, and the one worth doing arithmetic on. Suppose you deposit $100 and receive a 100% match: $100 of bonus. The promotions page tells you the multiple and whether it applies to the bonus alone or to deposit plus bonus. The sum you must stake is that multiple times the base. Weigh that stake against how much you were planning to play anyway. If it is about the same, the bonus is extra playing time. If it is far more, you are signing up to play longer than you meant to.

Two other lines matter. Game weighting: slots usually count in full, blackjack and live tables for a fraction or nothing. And a maximum bet while the bonus is active, which voids winnings if you exceed it.

The truly free option

Many slots can be opened in demo mode with play money, no deposit and no account at some sites. It is the only way to learn a game's volatility and bonus round without paying for the lesson, and nobody advertises it because nobody earns from it.

Provinces and offers

What you are offered depends on where you live. Ontario's regulated market limits how operators may advertise bonuses publicly, and the provincial Crown sites run their own promotions for their residents. The offer that applies to you is the one shown in your own account's cashier, not the one on a landing page.

Should you take a bonus at all?

It is always optional. Leave the code field empty and your deposit is simply your balance, with nothing standing between a win and a withdrawal. Take one when the playthrough matches the amount you intended to play.
