Why the name changed

Microgaming was based in Douglas, on the Isle of Man, and claims to have built some of the very first online casino software in 1994. For about two decades its logo sat on the lobby of a large share of the casinos Canadians visited. In 2022 the company handed its content business to a new firm, Games Global, which took over the games, the jackpot network and the studio partners, while the Microgaming name stepped back from distribution.

For a player, the practical effect is small. The games carry a Games Global splash screen, but the maths, the paytables and the famous titles did not change overnight. If a friend tells you they played "a Microgaming slot" last weekend, they almost certainly mean a Games Global one.

One company, many studios

This is the part most guides get wrong. Games Global does not build most of its own catalogue. It works with a ring of partner studios that design games exclusively or first for its network, then publishes them under its banner. Names you will see in the game credits include:

• Alchemy Gaming, which built some of the more recent in-house-style titles;
• Gameburger Studios, known for 9 Masks of Fire and its sequels;
• Triple Edge Studios, behind Book of Oz;
• Just For The Win, Pulse 8, Foxium and several smaller teams.

So when you judge a "Games Global slot", look at the partner name on the loading screen. Two games from the same distributor can come from teams with completely different ideas about volatility. The titles that built the name

Thunderstruck II and Immortal Romance have something in common that newer slots rarely bother with: progression. Their bonus rounds open up the more often you trigger them, so a player who returns to the same game gets a slightly different experience on visit twenty than on visit one. It is a design idea from an older era, and it still works.

Mega Moolah, honestly

Mega Moolah is the most famous jackpot slot ever made, and the reason many people type "Games Global" into a search bar. Its top prize, the Mega jackpot, is pooled across many casinos. In 2015 it paid out £13.2 million to one player, a win Guinness World Records listed at the time as the largest online slot jackpot, and later wins have gone higher.

Now the less exciting part. A progressive jackpot is paid for by everybody's stakes, so the base game returns less than a typical slot would; the jackpot share is taken out of the return you see on ordinary spins. How Games Global slots play on a Canadian budget
