Same wheel, one new rule

The wheel is ordinary European roulette: 37 pockets, numbers 1 to 36 plus a single zero. A dealer spins a real ball in a studio run by Evolution. After betting closes and before the ball drops, lightning strikes between one and five random numbers and gives each a multiplier of 50×, 100×, 200×, 300×, 400× or 500×.

If the ball lands on a struck number and you had a straight-up chip on it, you are paid at that multiplier. A $1 chip on a 500× number returns $500 plus the chip. That is the whole attraction.

The number that pays for the lightning

A straight-up win on a number that was not struck pays 29 to 1 instead of the usual 35 to 1. That gap is how the multipliers are funded. Everything else on the layout is untouched.

Evolution gives 97.30% as the optimal theoretical return, the same as standard single-zero roulette, and that is what the outside and split-type bets deliver. Straight-up bets land a touch lower, at around 97.1%, because the balance between the reduced 29:1 and the random multipliers is not perfect. The casino can also run a different configuration, so the help screen at your table is the final word.

So which bets does the lightning help?

Only straight-ups. If you play red or black, dozens or columns, you are playing plain European roulette with a light show, at the usual odds. That is fine, just know it. If you enjoy the multipliers, you have to bet single numbers, and you accept a slightly worse deal in exchange for a real shot at 500×.

Think of it like a hockey pool. Picking the favourite every night gets you small, frequent wins. Picking the long shot pays huge when it hits, but most nights it does not. Lightning Roulette lets you choose which pool you are in, bet by bet.

A worked example: $10 on the table

Suppose you put $1 on ten different numbers each round, $10 in total. The ball lands on one of your numbers about 27% of the time (10 out of 37).

• If it is an ordinary number, you get $30 back ($29 win plus the $1 chip): a $20 profit on the round.
• If it is a struck number at 50×, you get $51: a $41 profit.
• If it hits a 500× number, you get $501, but that requires the ball to find one of up to five struck pockets that also carries your chip.
• About 73% of rounds, none of your numbers wins and the $10 is gone.

Ten dollars a round at around 60 rounds an hour is $600 of action. At a house edge near 3%, the average cost of that hour is about $17, with a very wide spread. Could you enjoy the same table at $0.20 a number? The multipliers work exactly the same way at small stakes.

Three habits worth keeping

1. Place your chips before you see which numbers are struck. You cannot bet after the lightning anyway; do not waste mental energy looking for patterns in which numbers got hit last round.
2. Ignore "hot" and "cold" number panels. They show the past. The next spin does not read them.
3. Set a round count, not only a dollar limit. Live roulette is fast and it is easy to lose track at 60 spins an hour.

Variants you will see in the lobby

Evolution has built several versions on the same idea. XXXtreme Lightning Roulette raises the possible multiplier well beyond 500× and adds lightning to more than straight bets, at the cost of an even lower base payout. There are also lightning versions of other games, such as blackjack and baccarat. Each changes a different payout to fund its multipliers, so read each game's rules instead of assuming it works like this one.
